Laguna Beach and Carmel-by-the-sea
My blog today will shed light on two romantic California beach
cities- Laguna Beach and Carmel-by-the-sea. These two cities are very similar and I used to confuse between them before discovering that one is in Central California while the other being in Southern California. They are both charming cities and very interesting to visit.
Geographical Location
The first, Laguna Beach, is located 50 miles south of Los
Angeles and it stretches a full seven miles of coastline that is studded with
28 scenic beaches, bays, and coves. On the other hand, Carmel-by-the-sea is 120
miles south of San Francisco, tucked in as part of the Monterey Bay National
Marine Sanctuary. Learn more about the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Here .
Climate
Laguna enjoys a very mild climate with average annual daytime temperatures ranging between the mid-'60s in the winter months and the low-'80s in the summer months. December is the coolest month, August is the warmest. January, February and March receive the most rainfall, with an average of 2.5 inches. Identically, Carmel-by-the-Sea delivers a Mediterranean climate and experiences moderate weather all year long, with temperatures ranging from 57 -- 65 degrees.

A short historical glance.
Laguna Beach, Southern California's premier coastal
destination. Located midway between Los Angeles and San Diego, this seven-mile
stretch of sand and surf offers a year-round retreat for art lovers, nature
enthusiasts and beachgoers. The area was named Lagonas by the coastal Indians who first
lived there, and who were attracted by two rare freshwater lagoons in the
nearby canyon. But by the time the first non-Indian settlers arrived in the
1870s, the area now known as Laguna Beach had more than mere physical allure.
Unlike most of the rest of Orange County, it was never included in any of the
Spanish land grants. The cove-filled coastline attracted a handful of
homesteaders. But the land was too steep and rocky for agriculture or ranching.
Instead, Laguna quickly gained a reputation as a beachfront resort. The city now
claims more than 75 art galleries. Click on this Link to learn more about the galleries and art festival in Laguna Beach. Other than its own natural beauty - which
attracts tourists and gives artists something to paint, it has no real industry.
On the other hand, years after the founding of Carmel Mission in 1771, the
dream of Carmel as a village-by-the-sea was realized only slowly at the
beginning of the 20th century. Click Here to read more about the Carmel Mission. The natural beauty of the land and the sea had
been there for centuries when the founders began to create this amazing
community. Abbie Jane Hunter and her San Francisco-based Women’s Real
Estate Investment Company take over from the Duckworth brothers and begin a new
development scheme. This is the first time the name “Carmel-by-the-Sea” is
used. New homes are built and families begin to arrive — a hometown is born! Carmelites have always loved their special events. Often
they were elaborate annual affairs involving costumes, parades, and animals.
The Dutch Market began very early on as a fundraiser for the Arts and Crafts
Club and was held across from the Pine Inn. Here village residents Helen
Judson, Josephine Foster, Carrie Sterling, and Mary Connolly are looking
festive in their costumes.
Artistically speaking, the two cities are artists’ havens in
the California regions where they are located. Today, Carmel continues to
attract artists, photographers, writers, art enthusiasts, and visitors who want
to be inspired. Likewise, Laguna Beach's cultural scene is powered by over 70
galleries and over 400 working artists, with many of them opening their studios
for an intimate look at the creative process.

Non-Hispanic whites constituted 19,472, Non-Hispanic Black constituted 158, Hispanic or Latino constituted 1,650, and Asians constituted 797.
On the contrary, as of 2010, Carmel-by-the-Sea's population is 3,938 people. Since 2000, it has had a population growth of -3.46 percent. The median home cost in Carmel-by-the-Sea is $679,040. Whites constituted 93% of the population, Asians 2%, and Hispanic 4%. Median household income in Carmel: 76,934$.
To conclude, these two similar but different cities are considered beach cities on the California Coast. They both have rich marine lives and are located an hour away from major cities. I encourage the whole class to visit those cities as they are artists havens and are very charming.
